The masthead for the home page of this exercise is a lithograph published by the Stecher Lithograph Company in Rochester, New York in 1902.
The source is a website of posters and images celebrating the 107th birthday of the brownie camera this year. As a photophobic, I totally sympathized with the brownie, but more importantly, wanted to practice working with images of this era.
I built up the edges using a swatch extrapolated from the background of the poster, duplicated in several layers and with various opacities; built up the yellow bow on the photographer's head so it wouldn't look cut off by poor editing techniques; and worked with levels and opacities to focus on the body of the poster within the layered frame. The title is a simple Palatino font, transformed and layered with the charcoal filter applied to one duplicated text layer.
In searching for design inspiration, I first extrapolated this camera from a cluttered background, using the quick mask, thinking I'd simply poise the camera on the top margin of the page, pointed at the title. I don't yet have the CSS placement skills for that.
