dropcapredegar Iron Works in Richmond, Virginia, was the south's largest industry, flourishing in the mid-nineteenth century in the region's most industrially diverse city. During the Civil War, Tredegar served as the major source of ordnance to the Confederate government and military, the second-largest producer of ordnance, north or south.

Tredegar was a southern industry with a southern market substantially altered in the aftermath of war. Nonetheless, by the early 1870s, Tredegar more than doubled its pre-war capacity and employment climbed to more than one thousand workers, a figure exceeding the highest antebellum total. This website will explore Tredegar's post-war development.
